Meet the team: Jason Morrow

Introducing Jason Morrow, Operational Account Manager for Gold Coast and North Eastern NSW

How did you start working for Wormald? Tell us about your background

I started my career in the fire protection industry in 2001 when I began working for a small family-owned fire protection company servicing the Newcastle, Maitland and Hunter Valley regions in NSW. This provided me with great experience as I was able to learn about the industry from the bottom up, specialising in what is now referred to as portable fire protection systems that are used in a wide range of industries such as underground coal mines, vineyards, high rise commercial buildings and heavy large scale manufacturing facilities.

After relocating to the Gold Coast in 2006, I took on many different roles across the industry and gained valuable experience working with different industry sectors. Being responsible for managing the fire protection needs for many large sites including numerous major shopping centers across South East QLD, mine sites, hotels, schools, heavy and light manufacturing.

In 2018 I took a leap of faith and moved to Brisbane where took on a business development and service manager role for a smaller fire company. However, I recently moved back to the Gold Coast to be closer to home and am currently enjoying working for Wormald’s Gold Coast and Northern NSW office as operational account manager.

Explain your current role and responsibilities

We’re a small team so I work across many different areas of the business from business development and customer relations to scheduling technicians, generating quotes, conducting site audits and compliance reviews where necessary.

With new NSW legislation requiring individuals undertaking fire safety assessments to be recognised as an accredited practitioner (fire safety) in Fire Safety Assessment (FSA) and Fire Safety Design (FSD), I have now started the process of gaining the necessary qualifications from FPA Australia, which will assist both myself and our team in supporting customers and delivering in depth knowledge and practical solutions.

Our team is exceptionally customer focused and dedicated to their ongoing training and development.  This is vitally important, as they are the first point of contact for Wormald. We also like to be proactive in keeping our customers up to date with their site requirements.

What do you enjoy about working at Wormald?

I view every day as a new challenge and really enjoy working with our customers to help them find the best solution for their specific requirements.  Every sector, site and customer is unique, and I find working on new ideas and working through different solutions to get the right outcome very rewarding.  The fire protection industry is also constantly evolving with new equipment and solutions being introduced to help address specific fire safety issues or compliance requirements.

What is the most challenging aspect of your role?

Queensland is prone to severe weather conditions and our region can quickly move from drought to floods at a moment’s notice.  This can cause natural movement within buildings, leading to issues such as water leaks. During these severe weather events, it can be challenging to attend to all our customer’s needs at once in a timely manner.

What trends or issues are you seeing in the fire industry today?

It is pleasing to see more building and strata/body corporate managers, as well as work, health and safety officers, starting to take more notice of fire safety. This has led to greater interest in things like fire and evacuation training and signage, along with site fire safety compliance, especially within our northern NSW area’s due to the new NSW legislative requirements for Annual Fire Safety Statements.
