Spring 2026 bushfire outlook – Preparing for the fire season ahead

As temperatures rise and parts of Australia dry out, attention is once again turning to bushfire season and what the months ahead could bring.

The latest Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Spring 2026, released by the Australian and New Zealand Council for Fire and Emergency Services (AFAC), points to increased fire potential across several parts of the country.

Northern and southeastern New South Wales, south-east Queensland, northeastern Tasmania, parts of Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria, and large parts of the Northern Territory are among the areas mentioned for possible fire risk in the national outlook.

What’s driving these conditions differs by region. In parts of eastern Australia, dry conditions are increasing fire potential, while elsewhere increased fuel loads and dry soils are contributing to the heightened risk. And while some areas are forecast to experience normal fire potential this spring, that doesn’t mean they’re free from the threat of bushfire.

For fire and emergency services, councils and organisations responsible for protecting people, property and infrastructure, preparation starts long before a fire breaks out.

A key part of that planning is ensuring emergency equipment is ready when needed. Fire pumps, hoses, nozzles, valves and water delivery equipment all play an important role in supporting an effective response, particularly when conditions can change quickly.

GAAM has helped Australian fire and emergency services prepare for more than 90 years. Since 1933, GAAM has supplied specialist firefighting and emergency equipment to frontline organisations across Australia. Today, that includes Australian-made fire pumps designed for urban and rural fire suppression, along with hoses, nozzles, valves, and other specialist firefighting and emergency equipment.

Preparation matters at home too, particularly for people living in bushfire-prone areas. The GAAM Fire Defender is a portable, easy-to-use firefighting package designed for use around the home, including tackling small fires and helping protect property during bushfires.

Powered by a Honda four-stroke petrol engine, the Fire Defender delivers up to 240 litres of water per minute and comes equipped with a 30-metre delivery hose, nozzle and suction hose, mounted on a trolley for portability.

With spring underway and summer approaching, now is a good time to check existing equipment and identify maintenance needs.
